About BAC Water
Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol limits bacterial growth, which allows a multi-dose vial to be accessed repeatedly under sterile laboratory technique for up to 28 days.
BAC water is a standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised research peptides. It is compatible with all Pureline Biolabs compounds and is suitable for multi-dose use in laboratory research applications.
The 3ml vial is ideal for single peptides used in smaller volumes. The 10ml multi-dose vial is the most cost-effective option for researchers reconstituting multiple compounds.

The benzyl alcohol preservative is intended to limit microbial growth for 28 days after first access.
Standard storage conditions are sufficient. Keep away from prolonged direct light.
Usage Guide
BAC water is used to reconstitute lyophilised peptide powders into solution for research applications. Always use a sterile needle for each access to maintain vial sterility.
Clean the BAC water vial stopper with an alcohol swab and allow to dry. Draw the required volume of BAC water using a sterile syringe.
Clean the peptide vial stopper. Inject BAC water slowly down the inside wall of the peptide vial — not directly onto the powder. Gently swirl to dissolve.
Once reconstituted, store peptide solution at 2–8°C. Use within 28 days. Always use a fresh sterile needle for each access to both vials.

Laboratory reconstitution resources
Bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol and differs from preservative-free sterile water. Read our laboratory peptide reconstitution guide for an explanation of diluent selection, solution handling and storage.
You can use the Pureline Biolabs reconstitution calculator to calculate laboratory concentrations from the vial quantity and water volume entered.
Buying bacteriostatic water in the UK — common questions
What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits bacterial growth and is what allows a vial to be entered more than once. Sterile water has no preservative, so once the seal is broken it is single-use. For a multi-dose peptide stock that will be drawn from over several weeks, the preserved diluent is the one that makes sense.
How long does bacteriostatic water last once it has been opened?
The convention is 28 days from first entry, stored at room temperature or refrigerated and kept away from light. Date the vial when you first pierce the stopper rather than trusting memory. An unopened sealed vial keeps to the expiry printed on it.
Should I order the 3ml or the 10ml vial?
The 3ml suits a single reconstitution — one 10mg vial taken to 5 mg/ml uses 2ml, so a 3ml covers it with a little to spare. The 10ml is the sensible choice when several compounds are going into solution in the same session, or across a 28-day window. Ordering one 10ml rather than four 3ml vials also avoids opening four preservative clocks at once.
How much bacteriostatic water does a peptide vial need?
It depends on the concentration the protocol calls for: concentration in mg/ml equals peptide mass in mg divided by diluent volume in ml. A 10mg vial taken to 2ml gives 5 mg/ml; the same vial to 5ml gives 2 mg/ml. Our calculator runs the figures for every vial size in the catalogue, and the free reference chart on that page prints the common combinations.
Are there sequences bacteriostatic water will not dissolve?
A minority. Strongly hydrophobic or near-neutral sequences sometimes need a small amount of an acidic or basic aqueous solution, or an organic co-solvent, before being made up to volume with water. The reconstitution guide sets out the net-charge method for deciding which applies. For the compounds Pureline lists, bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent.
How fast do you ship, and where from?
Stock is held and dispatched in the UK, so nothing sits in customs. Delivery is free over £75, and bacteriostatic water is the item most people add to an order to clear that threshold. Full detail is on the shipping policy page.
